아일랜드의 전설적 그룹 Thin Lizzy는 1966년에 리드 보컬과 베이스의 Phil Lynott, 드럼의 Brian Downey 등이 소속된 지방 그룹 Black Eagles로부터 모태가 형성하기 시작했다. 이후 Phil과 Brian은 Gary Moore가 소속되어 있던 Skid Row에 공연 멤버로 가담했으며, 1970년이 되자 기타리스트 Eric Bell과 함께 트리오로 Thin Lizzy를 출범시켰다. 런던으로 진출한 이들은 Decca레코드의 오디션에 무난히 통과한 후 「Thin Lizzy」, 「Shades Of A Blue Orphanage」, 「Vegabonds Of The Western World」등 3매의 앨범을 1971-1973년 사이에 공개했으나 만족할만한 성공을 거두지 못하다가, 건강이 좋지 않아 그룹을 떠나게 된 Eric Bell의 후임으로 2인조 리드기타 진용(Scott Gorham과 Brian Robertson)을 도입하여 1974년 11월에 공개한 4집 「Night Life」(Still in Love with You 수록)가 유럽에서 좋은 반응을 거두기 시작했다. 이후 1975년 가을의 5집 「Fighting」과 1976년 5월의 6집 「Jail Break」가 연속적으로 유럽과 일본에서 베스트셀러가 되었으며, 특히 6집에서 발매된 〈The Boys Are Back In Town〉은 미국에서도 크게 히트, 최초의 골드앨범을 획득하면서 세계적인 스타덤에 올려놓았다. 1976년 11월의 7집 「Johnny The Fox」 (Don't Believe A Word 수록,이무렵 영국에서만 발매된 초기작품집 「Remembering Part One」이 공개되었음)와 1977년 9월의 8집 「Bad Reputation」으로 점차 심오한 헤비 사운드의 그룹으로 변신하고 있었는데, 특히 8집은 많은 평론가들의 대표앨범으로 평가하고 있다. Brian Robertson이 마지막으로 참여한 두 장짜리 실황앨범이자 9집 「Live & Dangerous」는 1978년 6월에 선보였으며, Gary Moore가 잠시 공간을 메워준 10집 「Black Rose」(Roisin Dubh (Black Rose): A Rock Legend 수록)는 1979년 봄에 등장하여 각각 팬들의 뜨거운 사랑을 받았다. 아일랜드의 전설적 그룹 Thin Lizzy는 Dublin에서 1970년에 결성되었다. 씬 리지의 창시자인 필 리뇨트(Phil Lynott)는 이미 틴에이저 시절에 스키드 로우(Skid Row)라는 그룹에서 숙명의 파트너인 게리 무어와 만났으며, 70년으로 접어들자 이 카리스마적 두 천재는 각자의 길로 나섰다. 스키드 로우를 나선 필(Phil)은 기타리스트 에릭 벨(Eric Bell)과 드러머 브라이언 다우니(Brian Downey)와 함께 트리오로 1년 동안의 호흡을 맞춘 후 71년 4월에 셀프 타이틀 데뷔 앨범 「Thin Lizzy」를 공개했는데, 당시 이 앨범은 이색적으로 룩셈부르크 앨범차트에서 1위를 차지하기도 했었다.
아일랜드와 라틴계(브라질)의 혼혈아로 태어난 필은 리드보컬과 베이스를 담당했으며, 한때 문학청년이 되려했던 그의 탁월한 가사는 타의 추종을 불허하기도 한다. 데뷔 앨범을 발표하며 아일랜드에서 런던으로 진출한 씬 리지는 이듬해에('72) 2집 「Shades Of A Blue Orphanage」를 공개했고, 73년에는 3집 「Vegabonds Of Western World」에서 아일랜드의 구전민요를 절묘하게 편집해낸 「Whiskey In The Jar」와 「Rudolph's Tango」등을 히트시키며 영국차트를 뒤흔들기 시작했다. 허나 1~3집의 앨범에 참여했던 에릭 벨이 그룹을 떠나고, 스코틀랜드 출신의 브라이언 로버트슨(Brian Robertson)과 LA 출신의 스코트 고험(Scott Gorham) 등 바늘같은 트윈 리드기타리스트를 영입하므로써 씬 리지는 전화위복의 기회를 잡게된다. 이같은 황금의 라인업으로 74년에 4집 「Night Life」를, 75년에 5집 「Fighting」을 각각 공개하여 유럽차트를 잠식하기 시작했으며, 76년초에 발표한 6집 「Jailbreak」로 미국시장 정복에 성공한다.
씬 리지의 최전성기로 평가받고 있는 76년에 영국의 멜로디 메이커지가 조사한 독자 인기투표에서 1위를 차지했음은 물론, 6집에서 커트된 "The Boys Are Back In Town"은 일본에서까지 히트해 이들의 명성을 지구촌에 두루 드높이기도 했었다. 76년 말에 7집 「Johnny The Fox」가 공개되었으며, 77년엔 최고의 명반으로 평가받고 있는 8집 「Bad Reputatiion」이 발표되었는데, 여기에 불후의 걸작 "Soldier Of Fortune"(Deep Purple의 작품과 동명이곡)과 "Dancing In The Moonlight"이 담겨 있었다. 76~77년에 걸쳐 화려하게 펼쳐졌던 월드 투어의 하일라이트가 더블앨범이자 9집 「Live & Dangerous」으로 78년에 공개되었으나, 이 무렵 브라이언 로버트슨이 손가락 부상으로 그룹을 떠나기에 이른다. 늘 어려운 일이 생길 때마나 필의 진정한 의논상대가 되어준 친우는 게리 무어였으며, 필의 요청으로 게리가 참여한 10집 「Black Rose」가 공개된 것은 79년 이었다.
80년으로 접여들며 씬 리지는 두뇌파 기타리스트 스노위 화이트(Snowy White)를 맞아들여 11집 「China Town」을 선보였으며, 이듬해엔 "Angel of Death"와 "The Pressure Will Blow"같은 원숙한 작품들을 싣고 12집 「Renagade」가 공개되기도 했었다. 허나 이번엔 스노위 화이트가 솔로로 전향하기에 이르렀고, 그 자리를 타이거즈 오브 팬탱(Tygers of Pantang)출신의 전율의 기타리스트 존 사이크스(John Sykes)가 메워줬으며, 키보디스트 다렌 와튼(Darren Wharton)이 가세해 5인조 진용으로 13집 「Thuder & Lightning」이 83년초에 공개되었다. 13집은 유럽에선 더블앨범으로(82년에 가졌던 영국 공연실황를 추가한)발표되었으나, 미국과 동남아에선 스튜디오에서 녹음된 신곡만을 담아 한장짜리로 공개된 바 있었는데, "Cold Sweat"이라든가 "The Sun Goes Down"등 나무랄데 없는 작품들로 채색되어 있었다.
거의 83년 한해 동안을 스테이지에서 보냈던 씬 리지의 고별 연주여행에는 최후의 라인업이었던 Phil Lynott - Scott Gorham - Brian Downey - John Sykes - Darren Wharton外에도 Eric Bell - Brian Robertson - Gary Moore - Snowy White 같은 씬 리지 출신의 거물들이 총출연하여 일대장관을 이뤘던 우정의 스테이지로도 유명하다. 당시의 하일라이트는 더블앨범으로 집약되어, 83년말에 「Thin Lizzy Life-Live Double Album」이란 타이틀의 14집이자 유작으로 공개된 바 있으며, 이 앨범에서 "Still In Love With You"가 국내에서 사랑받고 있다. 본 앨범은 국내 소비자들의 부담을 덜기위해 한장(Side3-4)으로 축소 발행된 점이 다소 아쉽긴 하나 해산된 후에나마 이들의 진가를 국내에서 확인할 수 있는데에 좋은 자료가 될줄로 믿는다.
1970~1983년까지 14년이라는 짧지 않은 세월동안 씬 리지는 여타 그룹들처럼 커다란 상업적 성공을 거둬 돈방석에 앉은 그룹은 아니었다. 그렇기에 우리에게는 씬 리지의 해산이 더욱 안타깝게 받아들여지고 있으며, 대부분의 그룹이 해산된 무렵엔 초기의 신선미를 잃고 있는데 반해, 씬 리지는 최후까지 장절한 사운드로 록 팬들을 사로잡은 바 있었다. 씬리지를 거쳐갔던 모든 멤버들이 모두 비범한 사나이들이었지만, 특히 시인이자 록커였던 필 리뇨트의 마력적인 분위기를 우리는 영원히 잊을 수 없다. 그가 게리 무어의 불후의 명곡 "Parisienne Walkways"의 원작자라는 사실을 굳이 밝히지 않더라도 그 특유의 니힐리즘적 목소리는 우리의 손상된 영혼을 달래주기에 충분했던 것이다···· 저자: 팝컬럼니스트 전영혁

내가 평생 들어본 Gary Moore의 Parisienne Walkways 버전中 국내에서 1987년 예음에서 EP로 라이센스 발매된 Empty Rooms에 수록된 1984년도 실황곡(Live at Ulster Hall, Belfast, Northern Ireland 18th December 1984)이 최고가 아닌가 싶다. 2002년 리마스터되서 재발매된 We Want Moore! 앨범에 보너스곡으로 실려 있기도 하다.

바쁜 와중에 인터넷을 검색하다 Virginia Zeani의 부고 소식을 접하였다. 예전에 그녀의 목소리를 유튜브를 통해서 듣고 미친(?) 해외직구로 그녀의 CD 몇 장을 입수할 수 있었다. 그 중 한 장은 터무니 없는 가격때문에 포기했었는데, 우연히 한 사이트를 통해서 빠진 이를 보충할 수 있었다. 그녀의 영면을 기원한다.

Carmen’s Synopsis
Written as an opera comique, Carmen’s story is told in four acts. Based on Prosper Mérimée’s novella from 1845, the plot is set in Seville and portrays the story of protagonist and tenor Don José, in a narrative of lust and obsession, as he is seduced by the alluring soprano and Spanish gypsy, Carmen.
Expressed through Carmen’s characters and Bizet’s exceptional music, Carmen was pioneering, changing the course of operatic history. Featuring expertly composed melodies, Carmen was an early form of realism in opera, a genre called verismo opera.
Act I
Opening on a town square in the centre of Seville, a group of soldiers are talking. Surrounded by townspeople, one of them, a young peasant girl named Micaëla, enquires about her love, corporal Don José. At the changing of the guard, José returns under the command of Lieutenant Zuniga and is informed that Micaëla is searching for him.
The bell rings in a nearby cigarette factory and a group of female workers emerge, headed by Carmen. Exceptionally beautiful, she flirts with the soldiers, but her attention is captured by Don José. Having ignored her, Carmen drops a flower in front of him. Reaching for it, José is enraptured by her beauty, even when Micaëla returns, bringing a letter from his mother.
His reads the letter, which requests that he marry Micaëla, when a fight starts abruptly in the factory. Seizing Carmen on Zuniga’s orders, José is instructed to escort her to prison. She entices José, persuading him to let her escape and he is subsequently arrested.
Act II
At a local tavern, Carmen and two friends, Frasquita and Mercédès, entertain the soldiers. Zuniga attempts to flirt with Carmen, followed by the triumphant bullfighter Escamillo. Carmen rejects them stating her heart is José’s. As they leave, two smugglers arrive and ask the women to assist with their latest plan. While Frasquita and Mercédès agree, Carmen refuses and awaits José’s imminent arrival.
The smugglers depart and José returns. Carmen is delighted and dances for him until the barrack’s bugle sounds. Readying to leave, Carmen teases his obedience and tells José to prove his love by living freely. Just as he refuses, Zuniga arrives in a rage and demands his return. In a fit of jealousy, José defies him. Instead, the smugglers reappear, restrain Zuniga, and José leaves with them.
Act III
At the smuggler’s hideaway, José begins to miss his former life. As a result, he argues with Carmen who declares she is no longer in love with him. Meanwhile, Frasquita and Mercédès read fortunes, forecasting love and luxury for themselves, but death for Carmen and José.
The smugglers discuss their scheme with the group and depart, leaving José to keep watch. During their absence, Micaëla arrives and hides, watching as Escamillo appears, declares his love for Carmen and quarrels with José. The smugglers return, stopping the fight and Micaëla makes her presence known. She begs José to come home, persuading him after revealing his mother is dying.
Act IV
In Seville, Escamillo arrives to an adoring crowd for his latest bullfight and is joined by Carmen as he enters the arena. Frasquita and Mercédès warn Carmen of José’s presence, rage and jealousy. Carmen decides to face him and put the matter to rest.
José pleads with Carmen, begging her to declare her love and commitment. He asks her to leave with him but she refuses, stating that her heart no longer belongs to him and throwing his ring to the ground. Enraged, José takes his dagger and pierces Carmen’s heart. She dies tragically as the sounds of Escamillo’s victory erupt from the arena.

1985년 국내발매된 상업적 성공과는 거리가 멀었던 비운의 그룹 A Drop In The Gray의 Certain Sculptures
나의 LP수납장의 맨 왼쪽 첫번째자리를 차지하는 앨범으로 황인용의 영팝스에서 자주 방송되었던 곡으로 Heartache Feeds Heartache과 Turn Me 'Round 두 곡이 생각났는데, 그 당시 이 음반을 방송에 처음 소개했었고 라이센스 음반 해설지 또한 썼었던 분은 당시 팝컬럼니스트로 활동하던 전영혁씨였다. 짝사랑과 실연의 아픔으로 괴로워하던 시절에 즐겨들었던 Turn Me 'Round의 가사의 일부가 아직도 기억에 남아 다시 들어보니 감흥이 예전같지는 않다. 그래도 그 시절에는 간절했는데, ...

The Doors와 짐 모리슨을 처음 어떻게 알게되었는 지는 도통 기억이 나질 않는다. 마치 그의 영혼과 꿈 속에서 조우(遭遇)라도 한것 마냥 내게는 너무 친숙한 그이다. 나의 20대까지를 완벽하게 지배했던 나의 유일한 우상이자 반면교사(反面敎師)라는 또 다른 의미의 스승이다. 여지껏 이토록 누군가에게 경도(傾倒)되어 몰입한 적이 있었나 싶다.

(2류 뮤지션이자 3류 시인이라고 누군가 말했었다.)
그럼 내가 첫 구매했던 도어즈의 5번째 앨범인 Morrison Hotel LP를 끄집어 냈다. 그곳의 이름모를 필자의 해설지에서 몇 자 추려본다.
'삶과 죽음, 사랑, 카리스마 그리고 일렉트릭 블루스의 독특한 변형 이것이 바로 그룹 도어스에게 부여된 심오한 영적 분위기였다, 무기력한 젊은이의 입장을 대변하는 신비주의적인 짐 모리슨의 보컬... (이하 생략)'

친숙한 이름들... 또한 고인이 되신 Ray Manzarek 그리고 생존멤버인 Robby Krieger 그리고 John Densmore.
짐 모리슨 사후의 The Doors와 그 멤버들의 앨범에는 관심조차 가질 않았다. 그들의 존재만으로는 더 이상 The Doors가 아닌 것이다. 그들의 디스코그라피를 간추렸다.

2nd. Strange Days (1967)
이들의 두번째 앨범 또한 Warner 직배 라이센스로 93년 발매되었다. 첫 곡 Strange Days부터 듣다보면 시간은 부지불식간에 흘러 어느덧 마지막 곡 When the Music's Over로 그 끝을 치달았다. 앨범커버를 들여다보는 재미를 CD에서는 느끼기 어려워 이 앨범 역시 LP가 없어 아쉽다. 애청음반이다. 앨범 커버 아트가 웃프다.

첫 구매앨범인 관계로 내게는 더 없이 편안하고 제일 많이 들었던 것 같은데, 국내발매음반(오아시스)에서 금지곡이었던 Peace Frog와 Blue Sunday가 이어지는 곡이었음을 나중에 알았다. Waiting for the Sun은 내게는 마법의 주술과도 같은 곡이다. 우리는 무엇을, 누군가를 기다려 본 적이 있었나? 내게도 가슴 떨리던 그 시절이 그립다.
